This small trial garden has been a pretty good success. I planted both radish and bibb lettuce on the same day and was able to harvest at the same time.
Learning to harvest your gardening efforts can also be a challenge. You’ve just spent 40 days growing, caring and nurturing your plants. You’re excited because their growing well, but all you‘ve seen are supermarket vegetables. Big, shiny, unblemished beautiful fruits and vegetables. So your saying to yourself, “just a few more days and they’ll be just like the supermarket.”
When growing at home, with minimal fertalizers, chemicals, pesticides, your harvest may not meet the expectations of size and perfectness. Supermarkets have the best and finest fruits and vegetables on display.
Learn to harvest your plants when their ready. It’s okay if you pick a few small raddish.
I’d rather be eating small radish then being disappointed at looking at my hard work being eaten by insects.
Enjoy the fuits of your labor, big or small and remember this was a test to see if we could grow in dollar store oil pans.
In the end, cherry radish wil grow great in shallow 4” pans. The lettuce also did well. I trimed off selected outer leaves. Hoping the plants will continue to provide future harvest. The radish I picked just what I needed for the meal. I think I’ll get three more meals for two from this trial for a total of 6 plates. Not bad for $5 worth of materials.
There is no comparing the flavor of home grown vegetables. The lettuce was full of flavor. The radishes, crisp, bright with color and just a touch of zing. We thoroughly enjoyed knowing that there were no chemicals or unknowns. That in itself tastes better. Enjoy!
