The 12 Gauge Shotgun

Recently, I wrote about the versatility and merits of the .357 Magnum Revolver and the .22LR Rifle. Today, I would like to expand that topic to include the most versatile long arm you can own: the 12 Gauge Shotgun.

Just like the revolver, the 12 Gauge Shotgun can be used for most any firearm task. Hunting, recreation, self defense all get check marks for the shotgun. With ammo ranging from birdshot to buckshot and slugs, the Shotgun really can do it all. From small game and game birds/ waterfowl to medium size game like deer and wild hogs, the shotgun can effectively harvest most game animals. A properly loaded shotgun is well regarded as an outstanding home defense weapon, as well. Until the recent switch to semi automatic rifles, shotguns were carried by Police throughout the world.

While there are all types of shotguns; semi automatic, single shot, double barrel and more, I prefer the pump action shotgun for most tasks. They are extremely reliable and give you multiple follow up shot capability. There are many reputable manufacturers, but the Remington Model 870 and the Mossberg Models 500/590 are probably the most popular today. Retail prices for these shotguns are around $350 for a basic model, but used ones can be easily found for less money.

My primary and secondary Pump Shotguns are a Remington Model 870 and a Winchester Model 1300 Stainless Marine. The Remington has been modified with a shortened 20 inch barrel and an adjustable choke device installed. My self defense loads of choice are #4 Buckshot, 00 Buckshot and Rifled Slugs. I prefer to carry spare ammo in a buttstock shell holder.

With so many types of firearms available today, the choices can be daunting. And everyone has different firearm preferences. Thankfully for now, in most parts of the USA, you can exercise your right to own many types of firearms. But, if I had to live with just the minimum, I would be satisfied owning a .357 Revolver, a .22LR Rifle and a 12 Gauge Shotgun (with spares, of course)!
