Week four of the oil pan container garden trial. The lettuce is showing considerable growth although I was expecting more growth from both the radish and lettuce. We’ve had a large amount of rain with intermittent sunshine that I’m attributing the slower growth too.
The lettuce is at a point where I believe I could start trimming leaves off for food. Of course this trial is not near enough to sustain a single person much less a family or group. Remember this is a trial to see how shallow planting affects the growth of radish and leaf lettuce..
I’ve grown radish in deep containers and directly in the ground and believe that the shallow container is limiting growth. Radish are usually ready to harvest in 30 days. We’re at 30 days now and the radish bulbs are forming just not at a rate I was expecting. I’ll follow up next week to see how developed the radish are as this is the moment of growth period for this vegetable.
The volunteer tomato plants are doing well despite the heavy rains and winds we encountered last week. The plants are brushing out and I have been carefully arranging the branches into the cages for extra support. Lots of blossoms have appeared showing that fruit is on the way.
To be continued…..
